the Domestic Affairs Laboratory

The "Domestic Affairs Laboratory" was an ongoing series of experiments in object-building, place-making, and movement that began in March 2023. The resulting assemblage of artifacts and experiences are intended as open questions and affective prompts about how we can think and feel critically about “the domestic”. This title signifies our broad conceptual focus on probing not just the physical spaces synonymous with “home,” but also understanding the domestic in relation to particular objects, histories, politics, emotions, rituals, and experiences. We work against the domestic as a site of forced integration, colonization, domestication, and social inequality. We propose, instead, a mundane world in which the everyday is salvaged to recreate the extraordinary. A world of cyclically retold stories, of homes that move us, of bodies claiming space, of learning as collective belonging, and of rituals of hosting and caring.
